Overview
The Related collection section (or "Related collections") displays other collections that customers might want to browse—for example, "You might also like" or "Shop related categories". It helps with discovery and cross-navigation on collection pages. Collections can be manually selected, based on metafields, or shown at the end of the product grid. This guide covers how to add and configure related collections.
Where It Appears
The related collection section typically appears:
- Below the product grid — After products on the collection page
- Sidebar — Beside the product grid (if theme supports)
- Collection template — As an addable section
Add it via Theme Customizer > Collections template > Add section.

How Related Collections Work
| Method | Description |
|---|---|
| Manual selection | Merchant picks collections in section or block settings |
| Collection metafields |
Theme reads collection.metafields for related collection
handles
|
| Same product type | Theme shows collections that share product types with current collection |
| Parent/child | If using collection hierarchy, show sibling or parent collections |
Section Settings (if addable section)
| Setting | Description |
|---|---|
| Heading | Section title (e.g. "You might also like") |
| Heading size | Small, Medium, Large |
| Collections | Manually select collections (or use blocks) |
| Collections to show | Number (e.g. 4, 6) |

Blocks: Collection (if block-based)

| Custom title | Override collection title (optional) |
Add multiple blocks for multiple related collections. Drag to reorder.
Step-by-Step Setup
Step 1: Add the section
- Go to Online Store > Themes > Customize.
- Select Collections template.
- Scroll to desired position (typically below product grid).
- Click Add section.
- Choose Related collection or Related collections (name may vary).
- Save.
Step 2: Configure collections
- Manual selection: Add Collection blocks or select collections in section settings.
- Heading — "Shop related categories", "You might also like", etc.
- Layout — Grid (2–4 columns) or horizontal scroll.
- Collections to show — 4–6 typical.
- Save.
Step 3: Use collection metafields (if supported)
- In Shopify Admin > Products > Collections > [Collection].
-
Add Metafield for related collections (e.g.
custom.related_collections). - Theme reads this to show related collections automatically.
Related vs Category List
| Feature | Related Collection | Category List |
|---|---|---|
| Where | Collection page (below products) | Homepage, other templates |
| Purpose | Cross-navigate from current collection | Browse main categories |
| Content | Related to current collection | Manually selected categories |
| Context | Dynamic (per collection) | Static |
Use cases
- Complementary categories — "Complete the look" (e.g. Shoes when viewing Bags)
- Sibling collections — Same level in hierarchy (e.g. Women > Dresses, Skirts)
- Parent collection — Link back to parent (e.g. from "Summer Dresses" to "Dresses")
- Featured collections — Manually curated "You might also like"
- Seasonal — Related seasonal collections
For merchants
- Choose collections that make sense (complementary, not duplicates).
- 4–6 related collections is typical.
- Ensure collections have images for visual appeal.
- Use for discovery—help customers find next category to browse.
Common mistakes
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| No collections selected | Add Collection blocks or select in section settings |
| Wrong collections shown | Choose complementary collections manually |
| Section not showing | Add to Collection template |
| Duplicate with Category list | Use Related for collection page; Category list for homepage |
